Famous Cities of the World: Quito

Quito is generally a quite safe destination, although petty crime such as pick pocketing exists and some areas should be avoided after dark. Pick pocketing and purse snatching occur especially in the busy old town, in the public transport and at the main bus station. Quito is also home to South America’s largest religious complex. As soon as the town was founded in 1534, the Franciscans began building their temple. Quito is considered to be one of the most beautiful capitals in the world. The historic center of Quito, known as the "Old City" is replete with narrow and winding cobblestone streets, magnificent churches and open squares.

Quito is a terrific place to learn because almost nobody speaks English. Quito is also the gateway to South America so the city is a starting point for many travelers that want to learn Spanish before touring through South America. Quito is almost twice the height of mile-high Denver. The city is known for its warm days and chilly nights.

Quito is one of the most beautiful, richest and oldest cities in South America. Quito is the second most populous city in Ecuador after Guayaquil. Quito is roughly divided into three parts: the Old City at the centre, with southern and northern districts to either side. The greatest concentration of tourist facilities is in the North, including the airport.

Quito is at 2800 metres (9300 feet) - it’s the second highest capital city in the world (after La Paz in Bolivia). If you arrive by a flight, you’ll feel the altitude immediately upon arrival. Quito is nothing, if not amazing! One of the most beautiful malls I've ever seen! Quito is Ecuador's principal transportation hub, and although efforts are being made to improve air quality, it remains bad.

The greatest concentration of tourist facilities is in the North, including the airport. Quito is a stunning city which does not reflect Ecuador's extreme poverty (70% of the population lives well below the poverty line). Also we did not see the very poor (slum) areas that we saw in Lima and some other South American cities. Quito is a city of wonderful juxtapositions and stark contrasts. It's a place where you can travel to the past but still enjoy modern-day comforts.

Quito is located on a horizontal strip of land running north to south between beautiful mountains. The splendor of the city's natural setting, combined with its attractive squares, parks and monuments as well as the warmth of its people, makes it a unique and unforgettable place. Quito is the ideal place to learn the language as the Quiteos speak a very clear Spanish, easy to learn for every student. Quito is a year-round destination, having only two seasons, one wet and one dry, and for convenience the wet season in termed "winter.".

Quito is the only site on the planet where the Equator crosses over highlands. On the rest of the Earth’s surface, it crosses through jungle or ocean. Quito is separated into two basic sections, the old and the new cities. The old city is full of interesting historical buildings and many churches. Quito is the perfect place to begin exploring Ecuador. See the historic sites of Quito's Old Town and the city's dozens of museums; visit its hundreds of shops, cafes, and restaurants; and take advantage of the plethora of excursions, hikes and climbs in the surrounding area.

Quito is a modern city with every comfort and convenience readily available, yet retains a large historic district which has been declared a UNESCO cultural-heritage site. The new town contains numerous modern office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, banks, and much more. Quito is a amazing destination for families looking for adventure and something out of the ordinary, as well as for singles looking to enjoy the fresh landscape.

The sights are breathtaking! Quito is an exciting city and SAE can enrich your experience here with suggestions for cultural events to attend, indigenous markets to shop, tours of the colonial old town to walk and charming towns in the area to explore. Quito is known for its abundance of churches, convents and monasteries.
